One of a Thai leaving YK Curling Centre over ‘burgers and fries’

One of a Thai is leaving the Yellowknife Curling Centre at the end of the month over pressure to add finger foods to its menu.

Sousanh Chanthalangsy, owner and founder of the restaurant, says she’s committed to selling authentic Thai food but has been asked to alter her menu in recent weeks.

She says that’s not something she’s comfortable doing, so the restaurant will be leaving the facility after operating out of it for nearly five years.

“I just want to stick to my roots which is Thai food,” she said. “The club wanted us to introduce finger foods like burgers and fries and things like that. It’s something I don’t do and don’t feel comfortable doing.

“We’ve been there for almost five years. It was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make and it’s over something like burgers and fries.”

Chanthalangsy says One of a Thai will no longer operate out of the Yellowknife Curling Centre after December 29.

While the restaurant figures out what to do next, she told Moose FM she’ll continue to serve customers out of her food truck.

“The food truck is my baby,” she said. “It’s my pride and joy and honestly it’s where my passion is.

“During the winter it was really nice that the curling club opened up for us so that people could still have Thai food in the winter.

“It’s been a great almost five years and while one door is closing for us, I know another will open.”
