Going to Nuuk for the Arctic Winter Games? Get ready to pay

Sport North has started promoting charter flights to get parents to the 2016 Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk, Greenland.

But anyone wanting to see their children compete will have to pay a pretty penny to get there.

That’s because the cost for travel from Yellowknife to Nuuk is $1,850, according to Sport North’s website.

The Games will be held between March 6 and March 11, in what the event’s official website is calling ‘the largest of its kind in the history of Greenland.’

Doug Rentmeister, executive director for Sport North, says roughly 30 parents have registered for charter flights so far.

He says parents will actually end up saving money by travelling through Iqaluit, Nunavut instead of taking southern routes.

“We saw an opportunity with one of the airlines that’s doing a number of charters for us for the territorial trials,” he said.

“We heard that a number of planes contracted by Air Greenland heading over to Nuuk were empty.

“We thought there’d be a good possibility of them being filled with parents interested in going and seeing their children play in the Arctic Winter Games.”

People can expect to pay more for travel because of the remoteness of the host city. Despite the cost, Rentmeister says there’s a strong interest amongst parents to see their kids compete.

“Obviously it is a little more costly going to a destination of this nature but in order to see your kids, people are going to be taking the extra steps to ensure that they get there and support their children,” he said.

“We’ll make do. We’ve cut some areas and in some areas we’ve made sure that everything’s been in place so that we’ll have a full representation at these Games.”
