Parents told ‘be vigilant’ after child approached by stranger

Parents in the territory are reminded to “be vigilant” after a child in Hay River was approached by a stranger.

In a message to parents on Tuesday, Hay River RCMP said a six-year-old had been approached by an unknown man on Saturday while walking home from a friend’s house.

Police say the individual asked the child to “come here”. The child asked for the man’s name and refused to obey, instead remaining on the other side of the street.

The man walked away after the exchange. He is described as between 5 ft 8 in and 5ft 10 in, of medium build, wearing dark clothing.

In a statement, RCMP said: “It is recommended that parents and caregivers review safety procedures with children about not talking to strangers and what they should do if a stranger approaches them.”

Police advice for children if a stranger approaches includes “running to a safe area, noting a description of the person and/or vehicle and contacting a trusted adult and the police right away”.
