Three people rescued in separate Behchoko searches

Behchoko’s search and rescue team had a busy end to the month according to a police report released on Tuesday.

RCMP say three people were brought home safely in two separate search operations.

The first incident took place on the morning of Friday, January 29, when two snowmobilers travelling from Behchoko to Gameti were reported overdue having left the previous night.

The men were located within three hours of that report thanks to a joint effort by search and rescue volunteers, RCMP and ice road staff.

They were found near Timmy Lake, north of the Gameti junction, having experienced mechanical trouble with their sled. They had emergency supplies and food with them and were safely returned to the community with no further issues.

Later, on Saturday morning, search and rescue volunteers were again called out alongside RCMP following reports of a man unconscious on the ice near Edzo.

The man was taken to safety after rescuers administered first aid.

“Alcohol was determined to have been a factor and the male was fortunate that he did not require further medical attention,” said police in their report.

“The RCMP would like to thank the Behchoko search and rescue team. A tremendous community resource, they are equipped with boats, quads, skidoos and rescue toboggans.

“The team is comprised of approximately 40 volunteers and have the only certified civilian search and rescue dog in the NWT.”
