The Dead North Film Festival is back, and it’s bigger than ever

25 films will premiere as part of the fourth annual Dead North Film Festival in Yellowknife over the weekend.

And for a second year in a row, the festival will include productions from the NWT, Nunavut and the Yukon.

The 2016 installment will also feature more entries than ever before with 25. By comparison, a total of 16 films screened as part of last year’s event.

Dead North challenges northern filmmakers to make short films in the horror, science fiction or fantasy genre over a span of two months.

On Friday, productions for this year’s festival will debut at Yellowknife’s Capitol Theatre, with awards being handed out on Saturday.

There will also be a number of workshops on Saturday and Sunday to teach participants about everything from the business side of the film industry to special effects.

Festival director Meagan Wohlberg says Dead North has shown continual growth over the years, and is reaching far beyond the boundaries of Yellowknife.

“It’s getting outside of the capital,” she told Moose FM. “There are filmmakers working on projects in the smaller communities as well.

“I think people are attracted to what’s being produced in the North and that there are some world-class filmmakers up here.

“It’s definitely proven successful over the last couple of years for some of our teams and hopefully that continues.”

Recently, two films produced for Dead North have gone on to screen at international events.

In July, Kirsten Carthew’s Fish Out Of Water was featured during Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.

A few months later, in December, Artless Collective’s Conibear screened during the Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival in France.

Organizers say tickets are already sold out for screenings on Friday and Saturday, but that workshops are still open to the public.
