Yellowknife-Dettah ice road closes for the season

The Dettah ice road has closed for the season.

In a tweet Monday night, the territorial Department of Transportation said the road would no longer stay open due to ‘extremely warm weather.’

That means no further travel is permitted on the road linking Yellowknife and Dettah across the frozen Great Slave Lake.

This year’s closure comes seven days later than last year’s announcement. Following a mild start to winter, the road opened on January 2 this year.

The 15-year average opening date for the Dettah ice road is December 21, with an average closing date of April 21.

On Monday afternoon, the department warned the route could close on short notice. That decision became official later in the evening, with the route closing to all traffic at 10:00pm.

Separately, government officials say ice roads in Aklavik and Tuktoyaktuk could close with little or no notice due to deteriorating conditions.

Testing results show another school in the territory with elevated levels of lead in water. Since comprehensive testing of schools across the N.W.T. began this fall, 31 school sites out of 38 announced to date have tested positive for elevated levels of lead. The Hay River Library Committee is stepping away from their role overseeing local library services. Hay River Councillor and Deputy Mayor Keith Dohey issued the announcement on the town’s website and social media page on Thursday. Dohey said that after years of service, the committee will no longer be overseeing the library as of April 30.

Military says largest Arctic NANOOK operation to date has concluded

The Canadian Armed Forces says its largest and most comprehensive winter annual NANOOK operation yet has concluded. This year the operation exceeded its annual distance range by thousands of kilometres and took place over an extended period beginning in February. Operation NANOOK-NUNALIVUT 2026 took place from February to April 2026 and included approximately 1,300 armed forces personnel.

Parking meter rates to increase beginning May 1

The City of Yellowknife is reminding residents that the updated parking meter rates approved in December of last year will be coming into effect beginning on May 1, 2026.
