Iconic Robertson headframe will not be preserved by the GNWT

The territorial government says it will not be preserving the Robertson headframe after negotiating with the owners of the now-defunct Con Mine.

The GNWT says it was trying to save the iconic structure from demolition given its historical significance when it opened discussions with Miramar Northern Mining Ltd. earlier this year.

Last month, some regular MLAs expressed surprise that the government was even holding talks to keep the headframe standing.

On Friday, the GNWT revealed it would not be preserving it following a lengthy review of options.

“Confidential discussions between the GNWT and Miramar have now concluded and the GNWT has determined that a suitable agreement could not be reached,” read a statement issued Friday.

“The GNWT appreciates Miramar’s efforts and its continued commitment to meeting the company’s remediation obligations at the Con Mine Site.”

In February of 2015, Yellowknife city councillors voted to end discussions about taking over ownership of the 76-meter structure.

Around that time, Miramar was planning to demolish the headframe in the third quarter of this year. It remains to be seen if that’s still the case.

The red-topped structure sits on the now-defunct Con Mine, where it’s been a Yellowknife icon since 1977.

Police investigating the death of a 73-year old man who went missing

Officers reported that the man was last seen leaving a senior’s complex in the community. "The 73-year-old man from Behchokǫ̀, who was reported missing to Behchokǫ̀ RCMP on December 14th, has sadly been located deceased," said police.

Suspect in custody after alleged police altercation during investigation

A suspect remains in custody after an investigation of two alleged assaults in Dettah, which according to reports, led to the “ramming” of police vehicles and an alleged altercation with officers. Officials reported that they believe the suspect was trying to “evade” police.

Water levels “very low” across much of territory

Scientists with the GNWT’s Environment and Climate Change centre reported that data collected last month showed water levels and flow rates for lakes and rivers showed that water levels were “very low” across most of the NWT. Climate change scientists also found that November temperatures were much warmer than average, but anticipate temperatures will be cooler than average across much of the NWT over the winter.
