Iconic Robertson headframe will not be preserved by the GNWT

The territorial government says it will not be preserving the Robertson headframe after negotiating with the owners of the now-defunct Con Mine.

The GNWT says it was trying to save the iconic structure from demolition given its historical significance when it opened discussions with Miramar Northern Mining Ltd. earlier this year.

Last month, some regular MLAs expressed surprise that the government was even holding talks to keep the headframe standing.

On Friday, the GNWT revealed it would not be preserving it following a lengthy review of options.

“Confidential discussions between the GNWT and Miramar have now concluded and the GNWT has determined that a suitable agreement could not be reached,” read a statement issued Friday.

“The GNWT appreciates Miramar’s efforts and its continued commitment to meeting the company’s remediation obligations at the Con Mine Site.”

In February of 2015, Yellowknife city councillors voted to end discussions about taking over ownership of the 76-meter structure.

Around that time, Miramar was planning to demolish the headframe in the third quarter of this year. It remains to be seen if that’s still the case.

The red-topped structure sits on the now-defunct Con Mine, where it’s been a Yellowknife icon since 1977.
