Homelessness Yellowknifers’ top priority, says city survey

Homelessness is a top priority for Yellowknifers according to the results of the city’s 2016 budget survey.

The city conducted a survey of people’s budget priorities between May and September of 2016.

Of the over 200 people surveyed, 90 people said homelessness was their biggest concern, followed closely by housing affordability at 77, and public safety at 75.

Each person surveyed was given a list of 10 community issues to choose from ranging from topics like littering to economic development.

They were then asked to rate each issue on a scale from one to five of what they believed was top priority in the community. People could rank more than one issue at number one.

Issues considered Yellowknife’s lowest priorities? Solid waste management with 35 people considering it priority number one, facility hours and services with 30 people, and public transit with 26.
