Robertson headframe will be gone by early November

The company hired to demolish the Robertson headframe on the Con Mine site arrived in Yellowknife this week.

Winnipeg-based Rakowski Cartage and Wrecking was at the site Tuesday to commence the demolition process.

This comes after an appeal to delay the structure’s demolition was dismissed by the city’s development appeal board last week.

Scott Stringer is Miramar Northern Mining’s general manager at the site. His company has been tasked with the remediation of the contaminated former gold mine.

On Wednesday, he told Moose FM work to tear down the Robertson headframe will begin immediately.

“The first phase, beginning this week, is to remove the buildings that are attached to the main structure,” he said.

Those buildings include a collar house, bit shop and a workshop. Waste rock storage bins will also be taken away.

Following that, Stringer says the columns of the structure will be prepared for blasting to bring the structure to the ground.

“We currently anticipate this to happen late October or early November,” he said. “It simply depends on how much progress the crew makes over the next week or so.

“The final phase will be removing the scrap and salvageable materials, along with cleanup of the site.”

Stringer says weather could have an impact on how quickly work proceeds. However, he expects all work to be completed by the end of December.
