RCMP advise Hay River drivers to stay off the road Thursday

Hay River RCMP are advising residents to stay off the road Thursday with a freezing rain warning in effect.

By the morning, as many as 10 vehicles had already gone off the road.

While there were no injuries reported, RCMP Cpl. Todd Scaplen says roads are dangerous in and around the community.

“The roads are treacherous right now in Hay River, south towards Fort Smith, south towards the Alberta border and north towards Fort Providence,” he said.

Scaplen says people should try to stay off the road until the territory’s Department of Transportation can get roads salted and sanded.

“If people don’t need to be out, stay home for now and wait for a better day to travel.”
