RCMP target impaired drivers with annual traffic operation

RCMP detachments throughout the Northwest Territories have launched Operation Gingerbread, an annual initiative aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road.

The traffic enforcement campaign kicked off Dec. 1 and is set to run through Jan. 31.

That means you can expect to see more police patrols and checkstops on NWT roads over the next few weeks.

Police will also be checking the operators of off-road vehicles like snowmobiles and ATVs.

Last year, 29 people were charged with impaired driving as part of Operation Gingerbread in the NWT.

A further 16 people had their licences suspended after police checked over 1,700 hundred vehicles territory-wide.
