YK shop to donate 20 per cent of sales to Quebec victims’ families

When you buy a coffee over the weekend, a portion of your bill might be going to a good cause.

On Feb. 4 and 5, local coffee chain Javaroma will donate 20 per cent of its total sales towards the families of the six victims of the Quebec City mosque shooting.

The Yellowknife business will be donating a portion of its sales from three of its locations.

“Hopefully more people will come and there’ll be more fundraising,” said co-owner Rami Kassem.

“Somebody has to take initiative to do something. It doesn’t matter what’s happening, when we feel like as Canadians we should do something, we do it.”

This isn’t the first time the coffee shop has responded to national tragedy. When an RCMP officer was shot and killed in Ottawa in 2014, the shop offered free coffee to men and women in uniform for a month.

“As a community place, as a community member, as citizens we feel obligated to do something for our fellow citizens,” said Kassem.

“It doesn’t matter who you are and where you’re from. If you are in trouble, we will try to help.”

A donation box will also be left out at every Javaroma location until the end of the month.
