Hay River’s Andrew Lirette is NWT’s Canada Games flagbearer

Hay River biathlete Andrew Lirette has been chosen to carry the Team NWT flag at the 2015 Canada Winter Games opening ceremony.

Lirette, 18, will lead around 150 athletes from the Northwest Territories into the arena during Friday’s ceremony in Prince George, BC.

“I think it’s going to be pretty big, there are going to be a lot of people. I’m pretty honoured,” Lirette told Moose FM moments after learning he had been selected.

Lirette’s first event will be the 15km individual, on Sunday.

Asked what his ambitions for the Canada Games are, he said: “It’s hard to tell because it’s a pretty wide age group. There are people a couple of years older than me but I’ll try to do my best.”

Lirette thanked his older brothers, also biathletes, for serving as his inspiration to get this far.

“My older brothers both were in it, and I would just go out and watch. It looked like a lot of fun so I decided to join,” he said. “I’m happy I did!”
