RCMP seize drugs, brass knuckles during Yellowknife bust

Yellowknife RCMP say illicit drugs and a prohibited weapon were seized from an apartment building on Range Lake Road Tuesday. 

During a search warrant, police seized approximately 2.4 kilograms of marijuana, a small quantity of cocaine. a significant amount of cash, trafficking paraphernalia and brass knuckles.

Police say Jesse William Coburn of Nanaimo, British Columbia has been charged with three narcotic-related offences and a weapons charge.

“The resolve is very strong among our members to rid our community of those who would come here to distribute illicit drugs,” stated Cst Elenore Sturko.

“This arrest is evidence of the RCMP’s strong commitment to bring to justice those responsible for the harm that accompanies the trafficking and use of illicit drugs.”

Coburn, 29, appeared in court Wednesday and will be held in custody until his next appearance on Friday.

Local nonprofits eligible for up to $10K in city grants

Yellowknife city officials announced they are still accepting applications for grants worth up to $10,000 for non-profit community groups. Last year, the city provided about $500,000 in funding to various community groups through sponsorships and grant programs including the Community Grant and Heritage Committee Grant programs. A grant committee who will decide successful bids are accepting applications up to noon on Jan. 19.
