Hay River Strike: unions call for third-party arbitration

Labour unions representing more than 30 striking Town of Hay River employees have called on the Town to turn the matter over to a third party for binding arbitration.

This comes just days after the latest round of talks to end the strike broke down in the community.

According to PSAC North and the Union of Northern Workers, which represent the workers, an arbitrator would set the terms for a new deal and help put an end to the labour dispute sooner rather than later.

“The community has suffered too much over the past 10 weeks,” said Jack Bourassa, regional executive vice president with PSAC North.

“It’s time we set our differences aside and allow a neutral party to decide what is best for the Town and our members.

“Third party arbitration will allow workers to return to work as soon as possible, remove all pressures from the community and begin to rebuild a harmonious relationship between The Town and its employees.”

More than 30 Town of Hay River employees walked out of work back on February 9 over a wage dispute.

A precautionary boil water advisory has been announced for the community of Sachs Harbour. 

Operation NANOOK-NUNALIVUT begins in Yellowknife, Behchokǫ̀ and Whatì

The Canadian Armed Forces announced planned military activities in the Yellowknife area for the next couple of weeks as part of their annual winter operations, called “Operation NANOOK-NUNALIVUT.” Increased military presence and activity within the city and and surrounding areas is anticipated, including the communities of Behchokǫ̀ and Whatì beginning Feb. 10 to Feb. 27.
