Yellowknife shooting: Two men face attempted murder charges

Two men, including a Yellowknife 18-year-old, face charges of attempted murder after Sunday’s Fraser Arms shooting.

Teenager Brendan Paul and Langley, BC, resident Travis William Campbell, 26, are both charged with two counts of attempted murder.

They were arrested inside an SUV, allegedly driven by Campbell, that led police on a high-speed chase through the city on Sunday night.

Only one man was reported injured following the shooting, heard by many residents in the vicinity of Yellowknife’s Fraser Arms apartments. He had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to the shoulder.

On Monday, police said they believed that to have been a “targeted attack” and were looking into possible gang ties.

RCMP now say they have enough evidence to charge both suspects with two counts of attempted murder.

“As this investigation has unfolded, there is evidence to suggest that more than one person was targeted in this incident,” RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko told Moose FM.

Campbell and Paul will face a number of charges in court on Thursday morning.

Campbell is charged with:

  • Attempted murder (two counts)
  • Use of a firearm while committing the indictable offence of attempted murder
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Failure to stop at the scene of an accident
  • Operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by police

Paul is charged with:

  • Attempted murder (two counts)
  • Use of a firearm while committing the indictable offence of attempted murder
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Failure to stop at the scene of an accident
  • Failure to comply with court-ordered conditions (four counts)

Paul, 18, was arrested and charged last month over the theft of guns from a house in the Range Lake area.

At the time, police admitted they had been unable to locate the stolen firearms.

The investigation continues.

Note: The initial RCMP news release naming the two suspects incorrectly spelled the name of Travis William Campbell as ‘Cambell’. This article has been amended to reflect the correct spelling.
