NWT MP Dennis Bevington will stand for re-election

Northwest Territories MP Dennis Bevington says he will stand in this fall’s federal election.

The 62-year-old New Democrat had previously refused to commit to a re-election campaign. He first entered Parliament in 2006 and was re-elected in 2011 with 45.8 percent of the vote.

In recent months, Bevington has been most prominent in Ottawa on the issue of reforming the Nutrition North food subsidy program.

He accused the Conservative government of making “politically motivated” statements and amendments to Nutrition North without tackling what he perceived as deeper issues.

However, an NDP-led motion calling for urgent reform to Nutrition North was defeated in Parliament earlier this month. Bevington says a New Democrat government, if elected, would pass those reforms as a priority.

Bevington can expect to face candidates like former NWT Premier Floyd Roland, set to stand for the Conservatives, in this October’s federal election.

Kieron Testart and Gail Cyr are standing for the Liberal nomination in the territory.
