Yellowknife man makes Caesars in Thailand, story goes viral

Caesar ingredients may not be very high on your list of things to bring on vacation, but the same can’t be said for Yellowknife’s Dave Zettel.

A picture of the 29-year-old sitting at a beach bar in Koh Lanta, Thailand with all the fixings for the popular drink has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook.

Zettel works as a respiratory therapist in Yellowknife and is due to arrive back in Canada this weekend.

The picture, which has been shared over a thousand times at the time of writing, was taken by Tyler Cull of Vernon, British Columbia.

“I was on an island called Koh Lanta and I was just sitting at a beach bar in my swim shorts,” Cull told Moose FM from Thailand.

“I was standing there talking to a guy who I kind of recognized and I said there’s another Canadian and pointed at a guy with a Toronto Maple Leafs hat.

“So we asked him where he was from and he said Yellowknife. And then he said, ‘well if you guys are Canadian I have something you’re going to like.’

“That’s when he reached down to his seat. At this point he was below the bar so I couldn’t see what he was doing and I was almost nervous.

“The first thing he pulled out was a bottle of Mott’s Clamato and then the Worcester sauce, Tabasco, salt and pepper and all the other ingredients to make Caesars.”

Doesn't it look pretty?

Cull reckons Zettel travelled over 11,000 kilometers with the ingredients before whipping up drinks at the beach bar. He told Moose FM the gesture was appreciated.

“It was awesome because anytime I’m going to have a drink, my first drink is always a Caesar so I was pretty excited.

“When you travel, you always talk about Caesars because nowhere else sells Clamato. When you tell people your favourite drink has clam juice in it, tomato juice and salt, they think you’re insane.

“We were able to then make a couple Caesars and let everyone from the bar try them. There were people from England, Belgium, Germany and they all liked them.

“That guy packed those ingredients just about 12,000 kilometers so he went through a lot of effort.”

Cull and Zettel were complete strangers to each other until a couple nights ago. In fact, Cull didn’t even get Zettel’s full name until he shared the photo on social media.

“That’s the only time I’ve ever seen or heard of Dave, that night at the bar, and I didn’t get his last name or anything like that.

“I simply put that picture up on Facebook and told the story and maybe 15 minutes later someone said it was Dave Zettel.

“I didn’t believe them but then I clicked on the name and sure enough it was Dave. Somehow I found a random person in Canada by sharing that post and I found him within 15 minutes.”
