Mildred Hall students celebrate Earth Day with tour of compost facility

Yellowknife, NWT – Today is Earth Day and one school from Yellowknife is celebrating after winning a recycling contest.

NorthwesTel’s Communications Director Christiane Vaillancourt explains.

“NorthwesTel is hosting grade five and six students from Mildred Hall at the Ecology North Compost Facility where they will be provided with a tour of the facility to learn about composting, reusing, reducing and recycling. It’s a part of celebrating Earth Day and it’s also part of our directory recycling program.”

Vaillancourt says every spring NorthwesTel asks students from across the North to collect phone directories so they don’t end up in landfills.

“One directory collected is one directory less in the landfill so 2.2 directories is that much better. The students did some extra collecting. They didn’t just take them from their homes, they went to friends and family and so on.”

Vaillancourt says over 6,000 directories were collected by students across the territory.

Mildred Hall students gathered more than 500 phone books, earning them a cash prize of $550, which can be used for anything from sports equipment to library books.
