Wood bat tournament ends YK fastball season

Yellowknife, NWT – Wood bats created a closely contested final tournament of the season for Yellowknife’s fastball players.

Team Rug defeated Team Dover to end a tournament in which home runs were hard to come by.

“A wood bat is what they use in the big leagues and you don’t, generally, see it at all,” explained Rob Johnson, one of the tournament’s organizers.

“A few of us have started using it in town. It’s a little harder to hit the ball – the bat doesn’t have such a sweet spot – so you’ve really got to hit the ball properly to get a decent hit.”

After a year in which Yellowknife’s fastball league lost a team, Johnson believes interest is picking up again ahead of the 2015 season.

“There are a lot more new players coming out – guys from slowpitch who want to try it, or who used to play years ago – so that’s good,” he told Moose FM.

“We’re hoping to have another team next year and get back to six teams instead of just five. It’s a little bit easier on the schedule.”
