Operation Gingerbread nabs 29 impaired drivers over holidays

29 people were charged with impaired driving in the Northwest Territories last month as part of Operation Gingerbread.

That’s up from last year’s total of 23. The number of drivers who were issued suspensions was also up this year compared to last.

The annual initiative, which runs between December 1 and January 1, is designed to make NWT roads safer over the holiday season by weeding out impaired driving.

Drivers likely saw more traffic patrols and check stops as a result of the operation.

“Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injuries that has immense costs and devastating effects in our communities,” said RCMP Corporal Todd Scaplen in a statement.

Over 1,700 vehicles were checked in the territory as part of the operation, resulting in a range of charges laid.
