Team NWT’s flights to the Arctic Winter Games delayed

Weather conditions have pushed back Team NWT’s flights from Yellowknife to Greenland for the Arctic Winter Games.

A series of three charter flights taking athletes, coaches and mission staff to the Games – in the Greenland city of Nuuk – will now each depart 24 hours later than planned.

Organizers of the Games have consequently delayed the opening ceremony by half a day, with the NWT one of several teams affected by bad weather at the stopover point of Iqaluit.

Teams from Nunavut and Northern Alberta have also been delayed. NWT hockey players, who were due to travel to the opening ceremony before returning to Iqaluit for their events, will now miss the ceremony and remain in Nunavut.

While the opening ceremony will be moved, the week-long sports schedule is not expected to change.

Greenland TV station KNR is set to live-stream the ceremony and many of the week’s events, with more clips available on YouTube.
