Canada welcomes 87 new citizens during Yellowknife ceremony

Canada has 87 new citizens hailing from 23 different countries following a ceremony at Yellowknife’s Greenstone Building Friday.

Mayor Mark Heyck, Premier Bob McLeod and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Ewan Affleck presided over the ceremony.

The citizenship ceremony is the final step to becoming a Canadian citizen. New citizens take the Oath of Citizenship and receive their citizenship certificate before singing the national anthem as a group.

“The story of Yellowknife really is a story of immigration starting in the 1930’s and continuing into the post-war years when we had a lot of people coming from various European countries,” Heyck told Moose FM.

“This is one of my favourite duties as mayor. It’s a really joyful occasion and it’s wonderful to welcome new Canadian citizens to our community.

“There’s been a growth in the diversity of our community for many, many decades and it’s beautiful to see it continue.”
