Missing boaters bound for Lutselk’e found safe, say police

Update 17:50 Thursday, July 7: Two boaters who were reported missing on Great Slave Lake have been found safe.

The boaters departed Yellowknife in a 16-foot boat on Tuesday and were supposed to arrive in Lutselk’e. They were reported missing on Wednesday night when they failed to arrive at their destination.

The announcement comes after five boaters were found safe Wednesday night after being stranded near Ethan Island on Great Slave Lake.

Earlier in the week, an entirely separate group of boaters made a distress call after one of their vessels sank in rough water.

Police are urging residents to exercise caution before heading out on the territory’s waterways.

“The waterways of the Northwest Territories are many and include vast bodies of water,” said RCMP Sgt. Bruce McGregor.

“Great Slave Lake is an example of this – it is a large and dangerous lake and can pose many challenges to those that travel on it.

“It’s extremely important that citizens of the Northwest Territories prepare themselves for travel on our waters.”
