Several vehicles were broken into in the Niven Lake area during the night of August 18, according to Yellowknife RCMP. Police received multiple reports of vehicles break-ins, prompting a warning to all residents to lock up their vehicles and valuables. “Theft from vehicles is often a crime of opportunity,” said Sgt. Donnie Duplissea. “The best deterrent is to take away the opportunity by simply locking your vehicles and not leaving valuables in plain sight.” The RCMP offer the following safety tips to deter vehicle break-ins: When possible, park your vehicle in a lit area, near street lamps or home security lighting Always lock your vehicle Double check the doors of your vehicle when exiting the vehicle, to ensure it is locked Do not leave valuables in your vehicle Report any suspicious activity If you know anyone about these incidents of if you see any suspicious activity, call the Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111 or through Crimestoppers online at http://www.nwtnutips.com/.
