Chinese woman dies in car accident on Dempster Highway

One woman is dead and three people are injured after a vehicle accident on the Dempster Highway near the Peel River ferry.

RCMP say they responded to a call around 8:45 pm on Saturday night, after a report of a single vehicle accident.

Three of the occupants exited the vehicle with injuries, while a fourth female adult was found dead inside.

“The fourth occupant, an adult female, was found deceased inside the vehicle, with the seat belt intact in the front passenger seat,” read an RCMP press release.

The occupants were from China, and the Northwest Territories RCMP have been in touch with officials with the Peoples Republic of China.

Police say road and driving conditions may have been factors, but no foul play is suspected at this time as the investigation continues.

“Driving the Dempster Highway is a popular activity with both locals and tourists alike,” said Marie York-Condon, RCMP media spokesperson. “Please travel safely when on our remote Northern roads.”
