Yellowknife youth charged with hoax – terrorist activity

Police say a Yellowknife youth is facing criminal charges after making a hoax terrorist threat.

The youth cannot be identified according to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but Yellowknife RCMP say they were arrested Thursday on a charge of Hoax – Terrorist Activity under section 83.231 (2) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The charges follow an investigation by Alberta RCMP that started at the beginning of November after they received a threat from Yellowknife.

The threat was later determined to be a hoax.

RCMP told Moose FM they are not able to give more details concerning the incident or the accused at this time, because of the type of charges and the accused’s age.

“The actual specifics on the hoax threat will have to come out in the court system,” said RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Cordon.

“The RCMP takes all threats to the safety and security of Canada and Canadians seriously and to determine their credibility, we must fully investigate each and every one of them.

“Investigations of this type take up significant resources.  These types of hoaxes are not pranks, and as such, criminal charges have been laid in relation to this incident.”

The youth has been released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.
