GNWT to post salary ranges online in bid for transparency

In a bid for openness and transparency, the territorial government has made the salary ranges of all public servants available online.

The GNWT says the move – which involves posting salaries on the Department of Human Resources’ website – is consistent with what other Canadian jurisdictions are doing.

Employee salary ranges can already be found through public job descriptions, but the government says all that information can now be found in one, centralized place.

“Openness and transparency are priorities for the 18th Legislative Assembly and this initiative accomplishes that,” said Robert C. McLeod, human resources minister.

“Providing information about salary ranges for all GNWT positions through our website is just one way to let NWT residents know how public money is being spent to maintain the public service.”

McLeod’s department will be responsible for regularly publishing reports containing job titles and pay grades as well as the minimum and maximum range for that grade.

However, the disclosure of any names and specific pay of individual employees will remain strictly confidential under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Salary grids and pay ranges for unionized and excluded employees, senior management and deputy heads is already available on the department’s website.
