Hundreds of bottles of alcohol seized in Behchoko over holidays

Over the course of three days, at least 340 alcoholic beverages were seized from entering the community of Behchoko according to RCMP.

The final counts are not yet complete, but traffic stops conducted between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 seized over 130 (375 ml) bottles of alcohol, over 200 (355 ml) cans and over 10 bottles of various sizes.

In mid-December, Behchoko residents voted to lift a seven-year ban on alcohol in the community. However, legislation has not yet changed, meaning the transportation of liquor into the area is still illegal.

“It is important for the community of Behchoko to understand that the RCMP must enforce current laws in relation to the possession of alcohol,” stated RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon.

“Until the legislation is changed, we will continue to look for contraband alcohol making its way into Behchoko and take that off our streets, reducing the harm caused by illegal alcohol in our communities.”
