Affordable housing in the NWT gets $18m investment

The federal and NWT governments will invest $18 million in affordable housing in the territory over the next five years.

The funding is an extension of an agreement initially signed in 2011, which has helped 311 of the territory’s households in the past three years.

“The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation is making considerable strides in providing housing for all residents along the housing continuum,” said territorial housing minister Robert C McLeod in a joint statement issued on Friday.

“This agreement will help the Government of the Northwest Territories continue to deliver on its priority of addressing housing needs by increasing the availability of housing and housing programs across the territory.”

The governments’ $18 million combined investment over the next five years follows 2011’s agreement to invest $11 million in affordable housing over three years.

In that time, the governments say:

  • 247 NWT households had access to “forgivable loans to undertake necessary repairs”
  • 58 units were built “to assist victims of family violence through support for three shelters”
  • Six households received “a forgivable loan for the construction or purchase of an affordable home”

At a recent gathering in Yellowknife, city officials expressed a desire for a 10-year plan to end homelessness in the territorial capital.

Waiting lists for safe housing in Yellowknife currently stretch into the hundreds.

Candice Bergen, the federal minister for social development, said: “This latest funding will help ensure that quality, affordable housing is available for those who need it most in the Northwest Territories.”
