Extreme cold warning issued for Yellowknife area lifted

Environment Canada has lifted an extreme cold warning that was issued for the Yellowknife area Thursday.

The weather agency said temperatures were expected to dip as low as -31 C with a wind chill of -51 C in the morning.

“A period of very cold wind chills is expected,” read an advisory issued earlier in the day.

“Extreme cold conditions with wind chill values near -50 C will continue [Thursday] morning but will moderate as cloud moves in.”

The weather agency says extreme cold warnings are issued whenever cold temperatures or wind chills create an elevated risk for frostbite or hypothermia.

Colder temperatures aren’t expected to stick around, however. By Sunday, forecasters are calling for a daytime high of -9 C.
