Northland warns of email and phone scam in Yellowknife

Northland Utilities is warning customers in Yellowknife of an ongoing phone and email scam.

The company says impostors are contacting Northland customers to ask for payment on overdue accounts and even threatening disconnection if payments aren’t made.

Northland first learned of the scam in January when it received a complaint of someone calling and asking for payments. The company became aware of the email scam this month.

It’s unclear if the two scams are related or if anyone’s fallen for either of them.

Carla Howard is senior communications advisor with Northland Utilities.

If in doubt, she says customers should contact Northland directly and report any instances of potential fraud to the RCMP.

“We recommend that customers who receive these types of calls contact the RCMP to report it and then they can contact us to verify their account information.

“We provide an essential service and that makes our customers an easy target.”
