Hay River strike action now set to begin on Monday

UPDATED 1441 MT, Fri Feb 6 – Strike action by Town of Hay River workers will now begin at 8am on Monday, February 9.

Initially set to begin earlier in the week, the strike was delayed when the Union of Northern Workers made an administrative error with its paperwork.

Around 30 of the town’s staff will take action. The town says it has identified essential services which will be prioritized while the strike is ongoing.

The dispute is regarding pay increases over the next three years – the town says it cannot match the union’s demands.

The union has been criticized by town mayor Andrew Cassidy, who says it misled residents when suggesting the town would seek to bring in replacement workers during any strike.

Cassidy says that was never the town’s plan.

In a statement on Friday, the town said there would be “minimal disruption to essential services”, with water quality and emergency response the highest priorities.

Services delivered to the town through contracts – garbage collection, landfill, trucked water delivery and sewage pump-out – are not affected by the strike.

The town said recreation will be one area where residents should expect disruption.

“There will be disruption [to] operations of the swimming pool and ice rink,” read the statement.

“The curling club will continue to operate under the agreed-upon lease arrangement.

“We will continue to update the public on the strike and collective bargaining process through the Town website.”
