More parking meters coming to downtown Yellowknife

Yellowknife, NWT – It’s official: more parking meters are coming to downtown Yellowknife.

Councillors have been debating whether to implement 2-hour and 9-hour meters on six streets over the next three years.

During last night’s council meeting, councillor Niels Konge put forward an amendment that he thinks is a better idea.

“First of all we canvass all the businesses that are currently on un-metered streets in the downtown and find out which of those businesses want meters and we get those installed immediately. Then we can move on to the remainder of phase one and whatever is left of phase two.”

Mayor Mark Heyck says revenue generated from meters would be returned to the city in one form or another.

“I expect council will be discussing this more in the coming weeks and months, which is pegging a certain percentage of that parking meter revenue to be reinvested directly in the downtown core so that those people who are paying for parking will see the results of the coins they’re putting in those meters.”

Heyck says a portion of those revenues could go towards streetscaping or public art.

Councillor Bob Brooks is critical, saying the money the meters make will only go to pay for their installation.
