‘Midnight Sun Fly In’ this weekend

The event has become a Yellowknife staple.

Every two years, the Midnight Sun Fly In puts on a show for the community. There are 32 airplanes currently registered with 7 more potentially coming from the Yukon. The extra 7 would make this weekend the biggest air show that the event has seen.

President of the Midnight Sun Association, Yvonne Quick, says that this weekend will only be matched by the original:

We’ve only ever had  as many as 32 and that was back during the original Fly In. Things have changed a little since then.

Yvonne has been a member of the original committee since the Midnight Sun began in 1995. She’s seen a lot in her time, but there are things that will still be new to her even after all of these years:

There will be the brand new Twin Otter in for this year. It’s gorgeous. Some people who attended 2 years ago would have had a chance to sign the ribs with their name; well, it’s that plane. It has an executive interior to this plane which is definitely something I’ve never seen before in a Twin Otter.

She stressed that the signatures won’t be open to the public to see with them being inside the plane but the magic of making your mark on it will still gravitate to the lucky few.

Another aspect that Yvonne mentioned was the experience of storytelling:

You’ll find that there is always a story to be told at these events, with the pilots. Just with the flying or being in the north and the people that were here. There’s history at every table.

There’s a lot of free food to be had this weekend and even Yvonne had a chuckle about that:

There’s a lot of barbeque, a lot of free things going on. Whether it’s the MLA barbeque or the Fox Moth lunch. The pancake breakfast. So much more… And then you have the planes coming in, it’s going to be a great weekend.

The event will be held at the Wardair Dock and will run from July 6th-9th.
