Search for missing mushroom picker continues

Northwest Territories RCMP continue to look for the woman who went missing at Reid Lake.

The woman is believed to have been visiting Canada from the Czech Republic.

Her name has not been released at the request of the family.

The search is now being assisted by a Transport Canada Dash 8, which is equipped with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology. Marie York-Condon, Northwest Territories Media Relations, says the tech could be a major piece in helping find the missing person:

The FLIR technology is a great tool, especially for searches such as these with a missing person in a vast and remote geographical area. We are thankful the aircraft was in the vicinity and was able to provide assistance…

Police want to stress safety for any volunteer search parties. They’re also asking any volunteer groups to stay out of the area as it may interfere with the work of the officials.

RCMP wish to remind the public to take the necessary precautions when venturing into remote areas:

  • Have a communication device (ex: SAT phone)
  • Have a GPS and know how it works
  • Work in pairs and closely to one another
  • Prepare for the worst (ex: getting lost or disoriented); it may take some time before searchers find you.
