The announcement of a GNWT online survey about carbon pricing is causing a stir on social media.
Some of the responses to the initial announcement of the NWT Carbon Pricing Engagement survey on the Moose FM facebook page include:
“I filled out the GNWT form. I am not surprised there is no way people who oppose the carbon tax can actually answer the survey in a way that opposes the tax. Just how it’s spent. I made my comments at the end but have a feeling I was wasting my time.” – Cliff Krause
“So another way for NWT residents to pay increased pricing on essential services such as heat and electricity? We are already one of the highest paying premiums in the country, and just had a set of meetings where the government and NTPC decided the residents didn’t need to be heard for our ever increasing utilities.” – Brian Couvrette
“Where are the MLA’s that during election time said that they want to keep people in the north and work with its people to make Yellowknife more affordable”? – Carl Radford

The GNWT reached out to Moose FM to clarify the purpose of the online survey.
“What’s happening here is the federal government plans on introducing a national carbon price sometime in 2018,” says Todd Sasaki, Communications Officer for the Department of Finance. “We have two options. We can essentially accept the national price imposed by the federal government or we can develop our own made in the NWT solution.”
Sasaki says the online survey will result in new legislation that will be introduced in the fall.
