25th anniversary of Giant Mine explosion

Today marks 25 years since one of the biggest mass murders in Canada.

On September 18th 1992 at approximately 8:45am, nine miners were killed due to an explosion at the Giant Mine.

The men killed were replacement workers and employees who had crossed the picket line in the aftermath of a violent labour strike.

In 1995, Giant Mine employee Roger Warren was convicted of nine counts of second-degree murder for planting the bomb that killed the victims.

He was given a life sentence with no chance for parole for 20 years.

The widows of the nine miners filed a $10 million civil suit against several parties including the Territorial Government.

The suit was originally awarded in 2004 until being overturned in 2008.
