YK Fire Department answers early morning call

Early last Thursday morning, Yellowknife Fire Department responded to a fire at 2002 Sissons Court.

The initial fire crew arrived on scene to find smoke and flame coming from a first floor kitchen window. Along with the present aerial truck and ambulance, the incident commander requested a Full Group Alert for additional firefighters and equipment due to the active fire.

The fire was contained to the first floor of the unit with heavy smoke and fire damage.

The fire did not spread to the neighbouring units.

A resident of the unit was transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital for a follow-up evaluation.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and will be looked after by the NWT Fire Marshall’s Office for investigation.

No estimate of the damage is available.

Crews make progress containing Wood Buffalo Wildfire

Crews report they have made progress containing the wildfire on the northeastern side of Wood Buffalo near the Whooping Crane nesting area. Bucketing helicopters were used to try to contain the fire along its north and south borders. The wildfire, located about 21 kilometres northeast of Highway 5, was last estimated at about 53,124 hectares
