YK1 working to remove asbestos found in areas of schools

YK1 is facing asbestosĀ in some of their schools.

The Yellowknife School District says there are no areas at risk to students or staff.

The three schools being focused on are JH Sissons, Mildred Hall and Sir John Franklin.

The issue is common in commercial and residential buildings built prior to 1990, due to construction standards at the time.

YK1 will be working with Associated Environmental Consultants and the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission, with help from the Government of the Northwest Territories, to come up with a safe work plan for everyone involved.

Areas needing the treatment have been closed off to staff and students. The majority of the work will be done during the major holiday breaks.

A town hall meeting has been scheduled for 7:00pm on Wednesday, at the Sir John Franklin gymnasium.
