Erasmus congratulates new Governor of General

There is a new Governor General of Canada.

Julie Payette was sworn into office yesterday as the twenty ninth governor general. Her predecessor, David Johnston, was in Yellowknife just last month.

Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus welcomed the new Governor General with an open invitation to the North.

As the new representative of the Crown, we encourage Governor General Payette to come to the north,” said Erasmus. “We look forward to a strong working relationship with the Right Honourable Payette to help diminish existing gaps in our relationship with Canada.

Erasmus added, “First Nations in Canada have a direct legal relationship with the Governor General as a fulfillment and provision of our treaties with the Crown.
