City shuts down security cameras following accusations

The City of Yellowknife has shut down security cameras for the time being.

The move comes after extensive media coverage over the last week, detailing a City employee misusing the cameras.

The employee in question, Doug Gillard, is the manager of the Municipal Enforcement Division. Gillard also faces accusations of making inappropriate comments about female city staff and having officers hit in the groin; however, none of these allegations have been proven in court.

The City says they take feedback and complaints from residents and staff very seriously. They encourage any individual with concerns regarding inappropriate behavior to contact them so that action can be taken.

Despite a City official previously stating the accusations having been investigated, they add in their statement that media involvement has limited the opportunity to make improvements.

The City adds that they are fully committed to ensuring a safe, comfortable and diverse work environment, where everyone is treated equally.
