Disney’s use of NWT scenery shows potential for local film industry
A little splice of Yellowknife in Hollywood.
Last January, a small film crew was in YK getting plate shots for the upcoming Disney movie, A Wrinkle in Time.
A plate shot is essentially spare background footage needed for later editing, such as green screening or digital effects.
Film Commissioner for the NWT Film Commission, Camilla MacEachern, says the small shoot is a sign of a growing film industry in the North.
“We’ve been primarily a documentary or reality television show-focused industry [in the NWT], but things are definitely diversifying. We’re now seeing more types of productions and activities, such as ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ doing their plate shooting here. It shows that our industry, our area, has outside interest and that interest is growing.”
The Disney movie ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ comes out in March.
MacEachern says that while she can’t share specifics, March will also be an eventful time for film in the North.
