NWT contracting company fined for 2016 death of worker

An NWT contracting company appeared in court this Tuesday.

Allen Services & Contracting Limited had been convicted of failing to ensure a safe work place.

The failure had occurred when a worker, David John Vinnicombe, was killed at a worksite just outside of Inuvik on June 28, 2016.

Allen Services was fined $100 000. The amount will be paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund.

The Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission says the death of Vinnicombe is an example of why workers’ safety is so important.

It is important that all employers take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of all persons on their worksites, including providing sufficient training for those operating powered mobile equipment and other heavy machinery. All employers must ensure the adequate instruction of each worker in the safe performance of their duties.
