RCMP arrest suspect diamond thief

A Yellowknife man is facing two charges in relation to a report of diamonds being stolen.

Last month, Yellowknife RCMP received the report from Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. of a suspected diamond thief. Following up on the investigation, RCMP recovered the missing diamonds and arrested a male suspect.

Samson Mkhitaryan, 39, has been charged with two counts of Theft over $5,000.

Media Relations for the Northwest Territories RCMP Marie York-Condon says the quick work done by police led to retrieving the diamonds.

It is important to recognize the quick actions of the diamond company and investigation by RCMP led to the successful recovery of the diamonds. The checks and balances in place were able to bring this illegal activity to light and the police of jurisdiction were able to make an arrest.

The investigation is continuing.

Mkhitaryan’s next court appearance is set for April 17th.
