JH Sissons rebuild to not impact education, YK1 says

YK1 is preparing JH Sissons for construction and renovation.

The forty year old school is the oldest in the Northwest Territories.

YK1 Chairman of the Board John Stephenson said that while the school will be seeing some construction in the next few years, the result will be a state of the art building.

JH Sissons has been on the capital plan, long term, for at least ten years. It’s due for some serious renovations or a replacement.

When you walk into the building, it feels good – it’s been a well-loved school. The decision has been made to build a new school, rather than renovating the existing school. When it’s done, the people of Yellowknife will have a brand-new, state-of-the-art education facility that will serve this community for the next 50 years.

Stephenson added that while repairments to the existing structure may seem to be the cheaper option, the Government ruled that a new building is the better option.

The Government of the Northwest Territories hired consultants to give advice on the school, and they looked at renovating the existing school; however, it was their assessment that building a new school was as feasible as renovating the existing school. So, overall, the decision was made to work to make a new school on the same property.”

YK1 also says the quality of education will not suffer due to the construction of the new building, and will actually benefit long term from a new school.

The School District is now looking into where on the existing property the new building will be built.

Current plans have the construction process beginning by 2021.
