NTPC, RCMP warn residents of over-the-phone scams

Beware of over-the-phone scams.

The NTPC is warning residents who may receive a call asking for credit card information to be careful.

A representative for the Power Corporation, Doug Prendergast, said that while it is unfortunate that this happens in 2018, it’s not uncommon.

It’s unfortunate but these types of situations emerge from time to time – one of the inconveniences of life in 2018. Customers of many organizations, including electrical utilities, have been targeted by these scams.

Prendergast added that should residents receive a phone call from what may be the NTPC asking for personal information to hang up and contact the Power Corporation directly.

It is always wise to be very cautious if people receive an unexpected email, text or phone call demanding payment for goods or services.

The scamming phone calls aren’t without impeccable coincidental timing, as March is Fraud Prevention Month for the RCMP. The police echoed the importance of using caution when a situation like this arises.

“[We’d like to] remind residents to use extra caution when dealing with businesses, organizations or persons; on the phone, via text or on the internet.

The NTPC notified residents through their Twitter account. You can find their contact information in their tweet.
