Two fires in Yellowknife, woman fatally injured

The Yellowknife Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the downtown Yellowknife area early Saturday morning.

YKFD initially arrived at 4916 – 46 Street with a duty crew of six personnel. No smoke was detected at first and evacuation had not taken place. After entering the building, light smoke was detected in a hallway. Fire officials investigated and found heavy smoke and sprinklers being activated.

Two residents were rescued and transported to hospital. RCMP confirmed that one resident, a 55-year old woman, died from her injuries. The other rescued resident suffered only minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

A second fire occurred earlier in the evening. YKFD officials responded to a call on Bigelow Crescent. The resident of the building advised officials upon their arrival the fire had been extinguished. Work was done to ensure the fire would not spread any further.

No injuries were reported.
