GNWT releases climate change and energy vision

The Government of the Northwest Territories has released its broad vision for climate change and energy in the territory.

The vision includes three documents: the 2030 Energy Strategy, 2030 NWT Climate Change Strategic Framework, and Petroleum Resources Strategy. The GNWT says those three documents will be vital in “[improving] energy security, [stabilizing] the cost of living and [should] address the impacts of climate change with clear and positive action.

Minister of Infrastructure, and Industry, Tourism and Investment, Wally Schumann, broke down the documents, and how each one is designed to benefit the territory’s future.

The 2030 Energy Strategy is our government’s commitment to developing an energy system that contributes to the territory’s economic, social and environmental well-being, while doing our part in the transition to a lower-carbon economy. In support of this vision, the Petroleum Resources Strategy sets a path for responsible oil and gas development that takes into consideration our government’s emerging vision for greater energy security and outlines a smart and sustainable path forward based on environmental and social sustainability.

With focusing less on fossil fuel, the GNWT hopes to see a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. By 2030, the transition could see levels 30% below what was emitted in 2005.
